Hello, I am Stuart Fellowes, Scottish Model maker & Sculptor, based in historic Stirlingshire.

My long career started nearly 40 years ago in an industrial setting as a trainee model maker with the renowned Glasgow firm Angus Modelmakers Ltd.  Here I was primarily working on commercial Architectural, Engineering and Town planning models. This led on to further work gaining experience in film, stage and marketing prop making with a bit of product prototyping and architectural decorative work added to that mix. Later, as an in-house model maker at Glasgow company, Broch Models, I learned the craft of carving in hard plaster. I developed these sculpting and carving skills over the years incorporating other materials such as stone and wood into my repertoire. I spent many years working on a freelance and commission basis until deciding to start Longline Studio in 2006.

The core of my work nowadays is reproducing in miniature Scotland's Pictish and Celtic history. I carve and sculpt my original models using a variety of miniature tools that I designed, made or adapted for my style of working. I have also over many years of experience and experimentation, developed my own blend of materials to enable sculpting extremely small and fine details. My work is rooted in traditional tools and techniques. I do not use any of the modern 3d printing or computer controlled CNC carving machines in my work. Everything is done by hand to impart a bit of spirit and soul into each piece. This results in high quality items of skilled craftsmanship. Skills that are rapidly dying out due to the advent of computer controlled production. There is no longer a commercial need for my hand skills and that is why I will continue with Longline Studio as a small artisan business.

My style of sculpture is to capture an element of the ancient in the modern. A lot of rough edges are in my miniatures to give the feel of an item that has survived centuries. I tend to measure by eye unless I am exactly re-creating an ancient subject. I find that an “Eye sweet” look is preferable to crisp and clean accuracy. It is a big contrast from the extremely exact, crisp and square Industrial modelmaking that I started my professional career on.

My inspiration comes from a deep love of Scotland and it’s rich heritage and history of stories, images and artistry created by our ancestors. I am proud to be a part of Scotland’s creative industry.
