“Stonehouse” Celtic Cross

This is a contemporary sculpture based closely on a carved stone memorial cross located at Old St. Ninian’s, Stonehouse in Lanarkshire. It is a typical Victorian age style of memorial Cross. Very simplistic but beautifully proportioned.

The Celtic Cross is widely used as a Christian symbol since the 4th Century and has its origins with early Pagan Celts who used similar designs to create “Sun Crosses”. Later ascribed Christian meaning by Missionaries in order to convert the Celts to Christianity. The cross can also be thought of as a meeting place of Divine energies. At the centre of the cross is a symbol, known as the touchstone where the spiritual energy is concentrated.

High Crosses were originally erected to mark a Holy or religious place such as a church. Some may have marked boundaries and crossroads. Outdoor religious ceremonies were also likely to have been celebrated around these “Preaching Crosses”

The cross symbol is thought to be a meeting place and receptacle for divine energies. This sculpture carries the spirit of the Celtic craftsmen and embodies the virtues of the cross

This piece comes ready with a hanging hole on the rear to enable it to be hung flush to the wall from a pin-nail.
