“Pilgrim’s” Celtic Cross

This is a handmade resin-cast miniature sculpture, Scotland. Indoors wall hanging

Height=220mm Width=130mm

This piece is a contemporary Sculpture by Stuart Fellowes and depicts a small personal Celtic Cross. This type of cross was often carried by a person as an altar piece, thus creating a temporary altar or focus for prayer when away from a church.

The original of this piece was carved by Stuart Fellowes into a block of wax in the same manner that a Celtic craftsman would have done to create a “Lost Wax” bronze casting. It is finished in an antiqued polished bronze effect to represent an ancient artifact

The Celtic Cross has been used as a Christian symbol since the 4th Century and has it’s origins with early Pagan Celts who used similar designs to create a “Sun Cross”, later ascribed Christian meaning by missionaries to convert the Celts and Picts to Christianity.

The cross symbol is thought to be a meeting place and recepticle for divine energies. This sculpture carries the spirit of the Celtic craftsmen and embodies the virtues of the cross

Indoors Wall Hanging. This piece comes ready with a hanging hole on the rear to enable it to be hung flush to a suitable wall from a pin-nail.

HOW THIS MINIATURE WAS CREATED

After many hours researching a subject, I travel the country to measure, sketch and photograph it. This information is brought to my workshop where I set about producing a detailed scale drawing. Once this is completed I use the drawing alongside the photographs to enable me to carve and sculpt the subject in miniature. This whole process  takes many hours, often running into the hundreds. At the end the miniature sculpture becomes the master model with which I make the molds. Each casting I make from the molds is an exact reproduction of my original sculpture. Cold-cast metal is cast using real metal, bonded with resin. I then spend a great deal of time with each and every  casting after they are taken from the mold. They are subject to a 4 stage polishing process using pigmented waxes to create an antique style finish. Every stage of this piece you see here is crafted entirely by hand.
