Chapelton Of Clunie Priest’s Cross

This is a handmade resin-cast miniature sculpture, Scotland. Indoors wall hanging

Height=215mm Width=85mm

This piece is an artists reconstruction of the 7th century cross-slab locally known as the "Priest's Stone" which is located at Loch Faskally in Perthshire. The original stone is created from 1.2m high black slate. Re-discovered in 1912 the stone was moved from it's original position to higher ground around 1970. This was due to the creation of the local hydro-electric scheme and the raising of the water level at Loch Faskally

Both faces of this slab are carved with a cross in relief. The arms of both crosses extend the full width and height of the slab, and the armpits have a double-cusped profile. It creates a style of cross not seen in any other Pictish Crosses but is more akin to Celtic styles.

Traces of an ancient ruined chapel are found a few metres from the Priest's stone. The stone was likely associated with the origins of this chapel. Possibly it was originally a “Preaching stone” used as an outdoor gathering place before the chapel was built.

Indoors Wall Hanging. This piece comes ready with a hanging hole on the rear to enable it to be hung flush to a suitable wall from a pin-nail.

HOW THIS MINIATURE WAS CREATED

After many hours researching a subject, I travel the country to measure, sketch and photograph it. This information is brought to my workshop where I set about producing a detailed scale drawing. Once this is completed I use the drawing alongside the photographs to enable me to carve and sculpt the subject in miniature. This whole process  takes many hours, often running into the hundreds. At the end the miniature sculpture becomes the master model with which I make the molds. Each resin casting I make from the molds is an exact reproduction of my original sculpture. I then spend a great deal of time with each and every casting to prepare and paint it using a variety of spray and brush techniques to create a realistic representation of the original, ancient subject. Every stage of this piece you see here is crafted entirely by hand.
