Camus Celtic Cross

This is a handmade resin-cast miniature sculpture, Scotland. Indoors wall hanging

Height=245mm Width=90mm

The Camus Cross is a Pictish High Cross located near the village of Monikie in Angus. It was carved in Sandstone probably in the 8th- 10th Century AD. Local traditions suggest that the cross marked the burial site of Camus, leader of the Norse army purportedly defeated by King Malcolm II at the apocryphal Battle of Barry. It has the style of early Irish Celtic Crosses. It is more likely that this cross was carved as a “preaching cross”

I have recreated in miniature the West face of this highly detailed cross. Using some artistic licence to “repair” some of the detail lost to weathering. The top panel depicts the crucifixion. The panel below depicts a Centaur. The late Rev W. D. Chisholm of Monikie,  theorises that the Saggitarius Centaur, as part of the Divine Bestiary represents the conquest of spirit over flesh. The bottom panel is carved with an Irish Celtic floral scroll design.

Indoors Wall Hanging. This piece comes ready with a hanging hole on the rear to enable it to be hung flush to a suitable wall from a pin-nail.

HOW THIS MINIATURE WAS CREATED

After many hours researching a subject, I travel the country to measure, sketch and photograph it. This information is brought to my workshop where I set about producing a detailed scale drawing. Once this is completed I use the drawing alongside the photographs to enable me to carve and sculpt the subject in miniature. This whole process  takes many hours, often running into the hundreds. At the end the miniature sculpture becomes the master model with which I make the molds. Each resin casting I make from the molds is an exact reproduction of my original sculpture. I then spend a great deal of time with each and every casting to prepare and paint it using a variety of spray and brush techniques to create a realistic representation of the original, ancient subject. Every stage of this piece you see here is crafted entirely by hand.
